The United States Tennis Association announced the Owensboro Tennis Complex as one of 12 winners in the USTA Facility Awards program. This annual program recognizes excellence in the construction and renovation of tennis facilities throughout the United States.
The $4.1 million tennis complex opened in April 2015 and features six indoor courts (inside the Centre Court building) and nine outdoor courts. The facility was built through a partnership between the City of Owensboro and the Owensboro-Daviess County Tennis Association.
To be considered for an award, facilities must be under the jurisdiction of a park and recreation department, an educational institution, a nonprofit corporation or be a private or commercially owned and operated facility that offers both USTA and public programming designed to help grow tennis.
Facilities were judged on the following criteria:
- overall layout and adaptation to site;
- excellence of court surface and lights;
- ease of maintenance;
- accommodations for players, spectators, and press/officials;
- aesthetics;
- graphics (including the use of signs and landscaping);
- amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services, and social areas;
- and the facilities’ participation in USTA programs.
The Owensboro Tennis Complex will be honored on September 1 at an awards luncheon during the USTA semi-annual meeting.
Calhoun Construction Services Awarded the Owensboro Tennis Facility
OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) –
Local officials and members of the Owensboro-Daviess County Tennis Association broke ground Friday on a new tennis facility.
The $3.7 million indoor and outdoor complex is being built at Shifley Park.
The indoor facility’s large windows will allow more natural lighting and help cut utility costs.
Tennis association officials say the project is a win for the community and the region, “We will be able to host larger state tournaments and people always love to come to Owensboro from the feedback I get, so we’re looking forward to being able to host more events in the tennis area,” said Phil Clark, Owensboro-Daviess County Tennis Association.
The city of Owensboro hopes to have the tennis facility ready for play before the end of the year.

Thruston – Philpot Volunteer Fire Department Station provides fire and emergency services to a 31 square mile area in Eastern Daviess County, Kentucky. The fire station now consists of 5 bays and a training facility.
Calhoun Construction Services served as the General Contractor for the Thruston-Philpot Volunteer Fire Department expansion self performing all concrete work and the standing seam metal roof.

The Owensboro Daviess County Tennis Association and the City of Owensboro combined efforts to make a long-time vision of a new indoor tennis facility a reality. Owensboro Daviess County Tennis Complex – Centre Court opened in April of 2015, featuring six indoor courts and nine outdoor courts. The massive tennis facility is nestled in the sports complex at Russell Shifley Park off Bittel Road—visible from the Bypass.
