He previously held the roles of controller at Dahlem, special asset officer at Louisville-based Republic Bank, and special assets manager at Louisville-based Commonwealth Bank and Trust, according to his LinkedIn page.
At Calhoun he will be responsible for financial planning, risk management, capital strategy and aligning the company’s fiscal priorities, according to the release.
“Bringing Dan on board is a pivotal step in our company’s evolution,” John Hinshaw, president of Calhoun, said in the release. “We’ve experienced incredible growth, and the time was right to add a dedicated financial executive to help us sustain that momentum and remain focused on smart, strategic decisions. Dan understands our business, our values, and our vision—and I’m thrilled to be working with him again.”
Hiring a CFO is a sign of Calhoun’s continued explosive growth since being founded in 2012. From 2021 to 2023 Calhoun increased its revenue by 156.24%, according to LBF’s List of Louisville Fastest-Growing Companies, jumping from $100 million in 2021 to $256.24 million in 2023.
The firm is responsible for some of Louisville’s most high-profile projects in recent years, including roughly 60 projects inside Churchill Downs ranging from the multimillion-dollar new Paddock unveiled last year to an $18 million renovation of the Turf Club. In total, Calhoun has overseen approximately half-a-billion dollars in projects at the world’s most famous horse track.
In addition to projects at Churchill Downs, Calhoun’s current projects include the Bardstown Aquatic and Sports Center, the new Algonquin Pool, the new Kentucky Humane Society headquarters, the renovation and expansion of Silver Creek High School and the new $27 million Louisville Metro Police Department headquarters, among others.
Calhoun is Louisville’s second-largest general contracting firm, according to Louisville Business First research, generating $273.37 million of revenue last year. The company employs 204 people locally.
“Calhoun has built something truly special—a strong culture, a commitment to quality, and a clear vision for where it’s headed,” York said in the release. “John has built an incredible team and I’m excited to help guide the company’s financial strategy through this next phase of growth. My goal is to support smart, scalable progress while staying grounded in the values that have made Calhoun successful.”
