The William T. Young Library, located on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, is named for William T. Young, a prominent local businessman, horse breeder, philanthropist and alumnus of the university, who began fund raising efforts with a donation of $5 million. The facility serves as a central library for the university’s social sciences, humanities and life sciences collections and acts as a federal depository and a public library for the state of Kentucky. It holds the record amongst public universities in the nation for the largest book endowment.

Calhoun Construction Services served as the General Contractor on an upgrade and re-purposing of the Library space in the lower level and complete remodel of the office area on the first floor.

Bellarmine University is a vibrant community of educational excellence and ethical awareness that consistently ranks among the nation’s best colleges and universities. On the edge of downtown Louisville Bellarmine is set on three beautiful hills in the artful and eclectic Highlands neighborhood. Downtown Louisville is just minutes away and offers world-class theatre, arts, sports, museums and gorgeous riverfront parks. Louisville is situated on the mile-wide Ohio River, at the gateway to the South and the crossroads of the Midwest. Two hundred million people – two-thirds of the nation’s population – live within a 500-mile radius of the city.

Calhoun Construction Services served as the General Contractor for the renovation of the home of the Bellarmine University Knights.

The Knights Hall project was a complete overhaul of the building’s interior lighting, lobby, ceiling, exterior paint and the heating and cooling systems. Knights Hall is a 2,196 seat facility. This renovation presented a challenge as the new gym floor had been installed as the first phase of the project and needed to be protected from damage.

Kentucky Guard cuts ribbon on two new facilities

Kentucky National Guard Staff Report

FRANKFORT, Ky. — To begin the new fiscal year, the Kentucky National Guard opened two new facilities Oct. 14,  in its continued effort to support the Commonwealth and the nation.

Gov. Steve Beshear joined Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini, adjutant general for Kentucky in cutting the ribbon on a new Army Aviation Support Facility in Frankfort, Ky. The new $26 million facility has nearly 126,000 square feet of combined space to house UH-60 Blackhawk and LUH-72 Lakota helicopters.

The new hangars and office space provide the latest in cost-savings technology and energy efficiency. It will replace the aging AASF built in 1971.

“The courageous men and women who constitute the Kentucky National Guard embody the words ‘service’ and ‘sacrifice,’” said Governor Steve Beshear. “It has been with the utmost confidence that I have called upon them in Kentucky’s time of need during an impressive number of federally declared disasters. This new Army Aviation Support Facility we’re dedicating today will only increase the effectiveness of the Kentucky National Guard as its members perform an already wide array of capabilities. With the best equipment and the best people, there’s not much we in Kentucky won’t be able to handle.”

Tonini then cut the ribbon on the Bowman Readiness Center in Louisville later that afternoon.

The Butler Reserve Center was acquired by the Kentucky National Guard in the fall of 2013 as a result of the 2005 Defense Base and Realignment and Closure law. Kentucky invested $4 million to renovate the facility. This center will support operations of the Commonwealth’s National Guard units.

“Events like these show the relevance of what we do for our to serve our metro, our Commonwealth and our nation,” said Tonini of the Bowman Center. “Make no mistake about it, this is a Kentucky National Guard facility. Not only will we honor the military legacy of the Soldiers walking through this building, we will enhance it and continue the tradition with Kentucky Guardsmen.”

With the newest construction projects ongoing at the same time, Col. Steve King, director of facilities for the Kentucky Guard, said it was a demanding undertaking, but a beneficial move in the right direction for the Guard.

“The Kentucky National Guard and Department of Military Affairs routinely manage between 30 to 40 projects at any given time,” said King. “These projects range from minor renovations and maintenance of readiness centers or armories,  to major military construction. When managing large scale projects simultaneously, it’s important to note the teamwork involved between all agency personnel. Most of these projects have federal funding, but all have to be worked through the Finance Cabinet for design and execution. This relationship is key to the successful execution of all these projects.”

The new Speed Art Museum is taking shape as the construction project reaches it halfway point this month. The Louisville museum, which has been closed since late 2012, will reopen in April 2016. Construction crews are renovating the original museum, at 2035 S. Third St., and will erect two adjacent buildings that will allow the museum to expand amenities and exhibit space.
Throughout the project’s nearly four-year timeline, it is expected to create 1,713 full-time construction-related jobs and contribute almost $5 million to the state and local economy, according to Speed Museum estimates.

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) –
Local officials and members of the Owensboro-Daviess County Tennis Association broke ground Friday on a new tennis facility.

The $3.7 million indoor and outdoor complex is being built at Shifley Park.

The indoor facility’s large windows will allow more natural lighting and help cut utility costs.

Tennis association officials say the project is a win for the community and the region, “We will be able to host larger state tournaments and people always love to come to Owensboro from the feedback I get, so we’re looking forward to being able to host more events in the tennis area,” said Phil Clark, Owensboro-Daviess County Tennis Association.

The city of Owensboro hopes to have the tennis facility ready for play before the end of the year.

The Louisville Zoo Snowy Owl Exhibit

Known for their beautiful white plumage, the snowy owls have moved into their new home signaling the completion of the
Zoo’s award-winning Glacier Run exhibit. Native to the Arctic region, the snowy owl is a stunning and mysterious looking animal. That could explain why it was chosen as a iconic character in the Harry Potter novels. Its signature plumage, which
ranges from pure white for males to white with some darker specks for females, serves as very effective camouflage in their frigid habitat.

The new exhibit was designed to resemble a rustic outbuilding sitting on the outskirts of an Arctic town– in this case, Glacier Run. The inside is equally themed having an industrial feel with trusses running down the center which serve as
perches for the birds. The Zoo’s snowy owl exhibit will showcase both a male that came from the Netherlands and a female
from the Minnesota Zoo. Because snowy owl populations are on the decline, the Zoo’s exhibit was designed deliberately to support a breeding program and help contribute to North America’s snowy owl population. According to Gary Michael,
curator of birds at the Zoo, Europe has had more luck breeding these beautiful birds; researchers believe this is due to the region’s cooler climate and better air quality. The interior temperature of our exhibit will reside at a cool 55 degrees with a climate-controlled system and a high quality air filtration system that will help keep the air purified. The hope
is that these special accommodations will encourage breeding.
