Churchill Downs Starting Gate Club

Louisville, KY

Horse racing in Kentucky dates back to 1789, when the first racecourse was constructed in Lexington. Almost 100 years later, in 1875, Churchill Downs officially opened its gates in Louisville and began its tradition as “Home of the Kentucky Derby” and the longest continually running sporting event in America.

Calhoun completed the Starting Gate Pavilion at Churchill Downs as a newly constructed venue designed to enhance the spectator experience near the iconic Kentucky Derby starting gate. Part of an $80 million renovation completed in time for the 151st Kentucky Derby in May 2025, the pavilion features stadium-style, padded seating, permanent concession stands, and betting windows, all within a covered, open-air setting. This development aims to provide guests with improved comfort and amenities while maintaining proximity to the thrilling start of the race.

The Starting Gate Pavilion is a key component of Churchill Downs’ broader efforts to modernize its facilities and elevate the overall fan experience, blending contemporary comforts with the rich traditions of the historic racetrack.
