One of Louisville’s fastest-growing companies is getting more space to expand.

Calhoun Construction Services Inc. has purchased a more than 96,000-square-foot building at 1703 S. Brook Street near the University of Louisville for $4.2 million, according to a deed filed with the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office.

Calhoun plans to demo part of the building and renovate the rest to become the firm’s new headquarters, said Calhoun President John Hinshaw. The company’s offices are currently located on National Turnpike.

“We will be doing heavy renovations,” Hinshaw said. “There are some nice, newer structures on that campus and then there are some older, wooden structures. We’re going to tear down the older part and then convert the rest of the space into Class-A office space.”

Calhoun is Louisville’s third-largest general contractor, according to Louisville Business First research, with $256.24 million of work billed in 2023, up from $206.39 million in 2022. That makes Calhoun, which has more than 150 employees, one of the region’s 50 fastest-growing companies.

The firm provides construction management, facility maintenance, pre-construction, trade contracting, design build, flooring and renewable energy services, according to the company’s website. Calhoun has done work for Churchill Downs, including its new paddock, and was recently awarded contracts for an aquatic center in Bardstown, two high school athletic facilities in Bullitt County and an LG&E operations center in Lexington, Hinshaw said.

Renovations will begin on Calhoun’s new headquarters in January, after the demo work is complete, he said, with a move-in date planned in May.

Calhoun said the new headquarters will provide the firm with more office space and construction material storage, as well as nicer conference rooms and space to grow various departments. The new offices will be about 80,000-square-feet.

Calhoun is the general contractor on the project, with LMH Architecture acting as the architect. Dahlem Realty Company represented Calhoun in the purchase of the property.

“[The new headquarters] just gives us a lot more capabilities,” Hinshaw said. “We will definitely continue to grow over the next several years. Churchill has a lot of work coming up out there at the track. … and will have several new, exciting projects coming.”

Calhoun isn’t the only company moving its offices in the coming months. Business First reported Wednesday that Shepherd Insurance is relocating its local office to the third floor of 9600 Brownsboro Road after renovations to the space are complete.
