Matt Winn’s Steakhouse at Churchill Downs

Matt Winn attended every single Kentucky Derby for 75 years. His first was the first.

Over those 75 years he served as a pioneer and innovator of horse racing at the iconic Churchill Downs Racetrack, changing the landscape of the Kentucky Derby forever.

La Bamba

Brothers Ramiro and Antonio Aguas became frustrated with the lack of quality Mexican food in the Chicago and Champaign areas, so in 1987, they opened their first store. Word spread and La Bamba became a hit.

More stores began opening throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Wisconsin, and now, they have 8 stores with family members involved at each location.

Calhoun Construction serves as the General Contractor on the demolition and construction of the new La Bamba in Louisville, Kentucky with 2 storefront opportunities in addition to the La Bamba.

Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza, a new concept in fast-casual dining, serves artisanal quality, custom-built pizzas at lightning fast speed, all at a very affordable price.

Red Robin

Red Robin, a Colorado-based company that was founded in Seattle in 1969, is a casual dining concept that offers appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps in addition to gourmet burgers and beer. The Clarksville Red Robin, is the third location in the Louisville area, was built in the chain’s new, more modern style and features a larger draft beer selection and new technologies.

Calhoun Construction served as a trade contractor self performing the metal stud framing, drywall, fiber boards, acoustical ceilings and site concrete.


Domino’s

In 1977, the owner of Central Missouri Pizza, Inc was a University of Kentucky business management student who delivered pizzas in his free time. Today, his company, Central Missouri Pizza Inc., employs 600 workers and operates 35 Domino’s Pizza stores in Columbia, Fulton, West St. Louis County and Louisville, Ky., making him the 11th-largest Domino’s franchisee in the nation.

Calhoun Construction Services provides the 24/7 emergency service for Central Missouri Pizza in multiple Domino’s locations throughout Kentucky. Calhoun’s services have included brick facade renovations, painting, drywall repairs, store front windows and doors, parking bollards, electrical service and generator installations to maintain the stores during electrical outages.


University of Kentucky – The 90

Construction on the dining facility first began in 2014 and completed in less than a year.

Located across the street from William T. Young Library, the 80,000-square-foot, $32 million building is part of a 15-year partnership between the university and Aramark, a national food service contracting company. As part of the partnership, Aramark is funding nearly $70 million in new and renovated facilities for dining services across UK’s campus.

Calhoun Construction Services served as a Trade Contractor self performing the work on the drywall, ceiling, metal framing, millwork, doors and hardware frames for the structure within the University of Kentucky. The 90 is a 1,000-seat dining hall for a Taco Bell and Aqua Sushi restaurant located within the university.

In addition, a research institute aimed at bolstering the use of locally grown food, class rooms and administrative offices are also located in The 90.


Churchill Downs 2nd Floor

Horse racing in Kentucky dates back to 1789, when the first race course was constructed in Lexington. Almost 100 years later, in 1875, Churchill Downs officially opened its gates in Louisville, and began its tradition as “Home of the Kentucky Derby” and the longest continually running sporting event in America.

Calhoun Construction served as the Construction Manager for the 2017 2nd floor renovation project. This project included mass demolition and reconstruction of the second floor restaurant, food service areas, bars and off track betting area.


Churchill Downs Starting Gate Suites

Horse racing in Kentucky dates back to 1789, when the first race course was constructed in Lexington. Almost 100 years later, in 1875, Churchill Downs officially opened its gates in Louisville, and began its tradition as “Home of the Kentucky Derby” and the longest continually running sporting event in America.

Calhoun Construction Services served as the Construction Manager and General Contractor for the expansion creating 36 new suites. The project included an addition of a new suite tower on top of the existing grandstand, new elevators, bars, and mutuels. The structure for the new tower is dropped through the grandstand and 2nd floor plaza. The project was completed while the track practiced every day and during three meets.
