The city wanted to improve the quality of experience for those that attend the many meetings held in the space, and even to eventually make it easier for people to take part in meetings virtually. Agencies that meet there include: Planning & Design Services, Codes and Regulations, and the Master Commissioner’s Office. The renovation additions included better lighting, acoustic, audio visual and a new projector for presentations.
Calhoun Construction Services served as the General Contractor for the Old Jailhouse Auditorium renovation including new concrete and drywall.
Kentucky International Convention Center
Under the Kentucky Venues brand, two major convention and exhibition facilities – the Kentucky Exposition Center and the Kentucky International Convention Center – serve regional, national and international clients. Governed by the Kentucky State Fair Board, Kentucky Venues also produces signature events: the Kentucky State Fair, World’s Championship Horse Show, National Farm Machinery Show, Championship Tractor Pull, North American International Livestock Exposition, North American Championship Rodeo, and All-In Hoopfest. In May of 2014, it was announced that a bill had been signed into law to advance the renovation and expansion of the Kentucky International Convention Center. The renovation design was unveiled in fall of 2015 and construction began in August of 2016.
The design improved navigation and pedestrian flow and enhanced the exterior of the building with a clean, glass façade for maximum transparency. Meeting rooms were upgraded and expanded; entrances were clearly marked. The Kentucky International Convention Center holds the distinction of being a LEED Silver certified facility. The project included the exhibit space increasing from 146,000 SQ FT to more than 200,000 SQ FT, all within existing footprint, column-free exhibit space and a new 40,000 SF ballroom.
Calhoun Construction served as a Trade Contractor, self-performing all of the metal-stud framing and drywall on the lower level of the facility.
Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center
The Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC), formerly Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC) was originally built in 1956. KEC is a large multi-use facility in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. It is overseen by the Kentucky State Fair Board, and is one of the ten largest facilities of its type in the U.S., with over 1,200,000 sqft of indoor space.
Calhoun Construction served as the General Contractor building a DAS Room for their new telecommunications system. Calhoun self-performed the metal stud framing, drywall hanging and finishing, ceiling, and paint.
Snowy Owl Exhibit at the Louisville Zoo
Calhoun Construction Services served as the General Contractor on the final phase of The Louisville Zoo’s award-winning Glacier Run exhibit.
The Snowy Owl exhibit is a sophisticated climate controlled rustic barn home for the owls to promote a breeding program of this endangered bird. The Snowy Owl exhibit is a 800 square foot temperature controlled building. The façade is covered with cement board siding painted by an artist and set designer themed to look like a building in an arctic town. There are sliding doors that open for the public to view the owls perched on trusses that run through the exhibit.
Dosker Manor Apartments
Dosker Manor was built in 1968 in downtown Louisville, KY. It is located between Liberty, Jackson, Muhammad Ali Blvd., and Preston Streets.
There are three buildings at Dosker Manor: A, B, & C. Dosker is located across the street from the neighborhood First Link Grocery Store, and is within walking distance to University Hospital.
Calhoun Construction served as the general contractor on the project. The scope of work included concrete and balcony repairs as needed on the exterior. Calhoun self-performed all of the repairs on this project.
